Photographers taking up video thanks to new DSLRs?

Matt Jeppsen | 03/29- 12:56 PM

Stu Maschwitz says “No.”

Over at ProLost, Stu Maschwitz has written a great post on the topic of photographers suddenly taking up video due to the new video-enabled DSLR cameras from Canon and Nikon. His answer? No, they won’t. Read on…

“Saying that photographers need to learn video because their cameras now feature video is like saying that you need to start a rock band because you bought an iMac that ships with Garage Band. It is entirely possible that you are a still photographer who has no interest in video. That is OK. You know what’s pretty cool? Photography.”

“Why do we expect stills shooters to suddenly take up video, when—if they had the slightest interest—they could have been carting around an HD camera for two years without taking up any more room in their bag than a prime lens?”

He goes on to denote the limitations when shooting video with these new cameras, and why they are wrong for photographers who wish to learn video, wrong for photojournalists, but right for filmmakers. It’s a great article, Stu makes a few excellent points. So if you are a photographer wondering about the video thing, or a videographer worried that photographers will take over your world, check this article out and simma down.

Build a DIY highspeed photography trigger

Matt Jeppsen | 11/07- 01:25 PM

Freeze slices of time, DIY style

If you’ve ever wanted to try shooting high-speed photography like balloons popping, drops of water, glasses shattering, you’ll probably appreciate the following tutorial from Matt Richardson. In the video embedded below, he shows you how to build a simple audio sensor for your DSLR using an Arduino controller that allows you to trigger the camera fast enough to freeze incredibly fast action. Not only that, he takes it a step further to automatically cut his room lighting once the controller is armed (ok Matt, now you are just showing off). It’s a really cool tutorial, watch below…
