One of the best reasons to have an eReader

Tony Donaldson | 09/07- 06:45 PM

If you’ve ever taken manuals for your cameras, speedlights, etc. into the field for reference, here’s a compelling reason to have an eReader like a Kindle or a tablet like an iPad.

I carry some of my owners manuals with me. Depending on the gear I’m carrying, the complexity, etc., I usually have a few with me. As much of a tech geek as I am, I’m still a little old school about some things. Speedlights, for example, have features I rarely use, and the menus can be difficult, and some of the symbols aren’t as descriptive as they could be, so the manual can be handy.

CRU-Dataport Introduces the New ToughTech Duo

Tony Donaldson | 02/23- 09:07 AM

High performance RAID on the go using notebook drives.

image

Sleek and sophisticated may not be the average consumer’s initial thought regarding hard drives, but CRU-DataPort’s engineering ingenuity has changed the playing field with ToughTech Duo. This high performance RAID portable storage system works with two 2.5” notebook drives or solid state drives to back-up and store data. Designed for professional photographers and digital media users while on location or in the studio, ToughTech Duo maximizes storage in a mini footprint (3.5” x 6.26” x 1.34” or 89mm x 159mm x 34mm) to ensure data integrity and protect digital assets. ToughTech Duo guards against data loss by writing the same information in real-time to both drives. It also saves from costly system downtime as the system can continue to run while the ToughTech Duo restores data on the hard drive.

“Expandable Holster-Style Camera Bags for Quick Access”

SANTA ROSA, CALIF – Sometimes all photographers need in the field is one digital SLR body and one lens attached.  Other times, just additional lens or accessories need to be added to the kit.  To meet this need, Think Tank Photo has completely redesigned its line-up of Digital Holsters™.  Available in early October in five sizes, their expandable “Pop Down” section allows them to hold lenses of two different vertical heights with the hood in position or with it reversed.  A feature new to V2.0 is the built-in side attachment system compatible with most Modular, Skin, or Multimedia components.

Nikon Launches The 36MP D800

Dan Carr | 02/07- 12:06 AM

Nikon has unveiled the new D800 today which features a 36MP full frame sensor along with all of the video function improvements we saw on the D4.  In an interesting twist, Nikon will also be offering a D800E which is identical except for the omission of the anti-aliasing filter.  This should provide increased sharpness in that variation, but at the expense of possible aliasing on patterned subjects.  With the enormous processing power needed to deal with a 36MP image it comes as no surprise that the D800 is capable of a lower fps burst than it’s predecessor. 4fps in FX mode and 6fps in DX mode.  It’s somewhat puzzling to see that they have also opted to go for two different flash card mediums and notably excluded the XQD format that was introduced in the D4.

Canon Launches Three New Lenses

Dan Carr | 02/06- 11:48 PM

New 24-70 L II and first wide angle primes with IS

The long awaited replacement to the Canon 24-70 f2.8 L workhorse has finally been unveiled alongside two unique new prime lenses.  The new Canon 24-70 f2.8 L II is 10mm shorter than it’s predecessor as well as 150g lighter which will make a lot of people happy until they hear the suggested price of $2300!  Canon also launched two new primes which are the first wide angle primes in the world to feature Image Stabilization.  A 24mm f2.8 IS and a 28mm f2.8 IS.  Both lenses appear to be very compact and will likely offer usable low shutter speeds which previously were only possible with a much larger aperture wide angle lens like a 24mm f1.4, but for half the size and half the cost.
